Monster Hunter Wilds has been one of the more scrutinized performance stories of the year — not because it runs badly everywhere, but because none of its platforms hit an easy, consistent target. Every version involves a trade-off between resolution, frame rate, and stability, and the "best" platform genuinely depends on what you value most.
PS5: three modes, three compromises
The base PS5 offers three selectable performance modes:

- Prioritize Resolution: targets roughly 3072x1728, capped around 30fps.
- Balanced: around 2496x1404, targeting roughly 40fps.
- Prioritize Framerate: drops to 1920x1080, targeting 60fps.
The frame rate mode is the one to watch for a specific reason: pushing for 60fps brings the image quality down noticeably, with reports comparing the visual result closer to Switch-era fidelity than the console's usual output. It's a real trade-off, not a free lunch — you're not getting 60fps at a slight resolution cost, you're getting it at a fairly steep one.
PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S
PS5 Pro predictably improves on the base console's resolution-to-frame-rate ratio thanks to its extra GPU horsepower and PSSR upscaling, giving a cleaner image at the higher frame rate targets than the base PS5 can manage. Xbox Series X sits roughly in line with base PS5's tier, while Series S — as is typical for cross-gen releases — takes the largest cuts to resolution and effects to hit its performance targets. None of the console versions is described as delivering a rock-solid, unimpeachable frame rate; Wilds is simply a demanding game across the board.
PC: more flexibility, not more stability
The PC version's headline advantage is choice: you're not locked into three preset modes, you can tune resolution, upscaling method, and individual graphics settings to match your own hardware and priorities. PC players also get access to DLSS, FSR 3, and Intel's XeSS upscaling, which gives a meaningfully wider toolkit for hitting a target frame rate than any single console mode offers.
That flexibility doesn't mean a flawless result, though — despite multiple post-launch patches from Capcom, even well-specced PC hardware has struggled to hold a fully consistent 60fps, particularly during the game's more effects-heavy monster encounters and in the game's more densely vegetated regions. The honest framing: PC generally delivers higher frame rates and sharper image quality than PS5's Quality-focused mode, but "generally higher" is not the same as "locked and stutter-free." Expect some dips even on capable rigs, especially without upscaling assistance.
Practical recommendations by platform
- If you're on base PS5 and want the best-looking mode without total frame rate compromise, Balanced mode is the more defensible pick over either extreme — Prioritize Resolution's 30fps feels sluggish for a game built around dodge timing, while Prioritize Framerate's image degradation is steep.
- If you're on PS5 Pro, you're in the best position among consoles — take advantage of the improved upscaling to run closer to the Balanced/Framerate targets without as much of a visual penalty.
- If you're on PC, don't assume a mid-range GPU will hold 60fps natively in every scene. Turn on DLSS/FSR/XeSS from the start rather than treating upscaling as a last resort — Wilds is tuned with the assumption that most players will have it engaged, and running native resolution on anything short of a high-end GPU is likely to produce more frame rate variance than the upscaled equivalent.
Verdict
There's no platform in Monster Hunter Wilds that lets you stop thinking about performance settings entirely. PC gives you the most control and generally the best ceiling, PS5 Pro is the strongest console option, and base PS5/Series X force you into a real trade-off between resolution and frame rate with no ideal middle ground. If frame rate consistency during hunts matters most to you, PC with upscaling enabled and settings tuned to your GPU is still the safer bet — just don't expect it to be a flawless locked 60fps out of the box.
