Helldivers 2 kills you constantly, and most of those deaths are fixable. New Helldivers tend to die from three things: bad stratagem calls, friendly fire, and a loadout that doesn't match the mission's faction. Fix those three and you'll clear far more missions than you fail. Here's a practical starting point.

Your first reliable primary weapon

The Liberator assault rifle — your default starting weapon — remains a genuinely solid choice throughout the early game, ranking just behind the unlockable Breaker shotgun among primaries. There's no rush to abandon it: it has good ammo economy, manageable recoil, and works reasonably well against both Terminid swarms and Automaton patrols. Don't feel pressured to immediately chase whatever the community currently calls "meta" — learn Liberator's spray patterns first, since weapon-swapping too early just means relearning recoil control from scratch on every mission.

Stratagem priorities for new players

Your stratagem loadout is more important than your primary weapon in Helldivers 2, and a good beginner structure follows a simple four-slot balance:

  1. One anti-heavy weapon — something that can actually threaten armored targets (Chargers, Bile Titans, Automaton tanks) rather than just chipping them.
  2. One orbital strike — the Orbital Precision Strike is a strong, cheap-cooldown early pick for taking out bunkers, nests, and clustered enemies.
  3. One support weapon or sentry — the MG-43 Machine Gun is a reliable early investment that covers both crowd control and light anti-armor duty.
  4. One backpack or utility stratagem — resupply, shield generator, or a traversal tool depending on the mission.

For area denial and crowd control, the Eagle Airstrike and Orbital Gatling Barrage are both top-tier picks that remain useful well past the early game, so unlocking them early is rarely a wasted investment.

Communicate before you call anything down

Every Resupply pod contains exactly four compartments — one per squad member — which sounds trivial until you're the player who grabbed three ammo drops while a teammate got none. The bigger rule, though, is about orbital and eagle strikes: always call out before dropping one near allies. Friendly fire is a major, avoidable cause of squad wipes in this game, and a two-second "clear!" callout in voice or ping chat prevents most of it.

Adjust your loadout to the faction, not just the mission

Treating your stratagem loadout as a fixed setup you never touch is a common beginner mistake that stops working once you push into Difficulty 7 and above. Some adjustments worth internalizing early:

  • Against Terminids, fire-based stratagems and weapons consistently punch above their general tier rating — bugs are especially vulnerable to sustained burn damage, and a flamethrower or incendiary grenades can outperform "objectively stronger" options on paper.
  • Against Automatons, precision and range matter more, since they'll engage you at distance with accurate fire — a loadout built around close-range crowd clear struggles here.
  • Re-evaluate your anti-heavy pick specifically per faction: what handles a Charger well doesn't necessarily handle an Automaton tank the same way.

Survival habits that matter more than gear

  • Stay near your squad but not stacked on top of each other — clustering invites area-of-effect deaths from bile spewers, rocket devastators, and your own mistimed orbital.
  • Watch your stamina and dive-cancel out of danger — diving cancels most animations and can save you from an attack you'd otherwise eat.
  • Extract discipline beats greed. A mission with 90% of objectives complete and a live squad beats a wipe chasing the last side objective — know when to call for extraction.
  • Don't solo-rush objectives on higher difficulties. Splitting up works on lower difficulties but gets punished hard once patrol density and enemy aggression scale up.

  • Primary: Liberator (starting default)
  • Support weapon: MG-43 Machine Gun
  • Stratagems: Orbital Precision Strike, Eagle Airstrike, and a resupply or shield backpack depending on mission length

This setup covers crowd control, a real anti-armor answer, and a way to bail your squad out of a bad situation — everything a new Helldiver needs before specializing further. Managed Democracy doesn't need heroics on day one. It needs Helldivers who survive long enough to become veterans.
