Helldivers 2 just received what its own developers are calling one of the biggest updates the game has seen since launch. Patch 7.0.0, subtitled "Devoid of Liberty," landed in August 2026 and doubles the level cap from 150 to 300, adding 15 new ranks for veteran Helldivers who had long since maxed out progression.
The follow-up patch, 7.0.2, arrived on August 25 with additional fixes on top of the initial rollout, a sign Arrowhead is treating this as a major content pillar worth iterating on quickly rather than a set-and-forget drop.
New enemies and a new front
The update expands the Galactic War map with a new Void region, giving players a fresh theater of operations against the Illuminate faction. Two mutated Illuminate variants debut alongside it:

- The Wretch, a fast-moving enemy that disables weapons on contact, forcing squads to rethink positioning against it.
- The Crusher, a heavily armored regenerating unit that punishes hit-and-run tactics and demands sustained firepower to bring down.
Perhaps the most significant structural addition is a full SEAF NPC squad that can join missions as AI-controlled support, effectively giving solo and understaffed squads a way to field a fuller team without needing more human players online at once.
Balance and quality-of-life changes
Beyond new content, Arrowhead used the patch to clean up several long-standing friction points:

- The emote wheel doubled in size to eight slots.
- The assisted reload system was reworked for smoother handling under fire.
- GATER vehicle performance received targeted improvements.
- General weapon and stratagem rebalancing shifted loadout viability across the board.
Community trackers described 7.0.0 as doubling the level cap and adding AI squad companions in the same breath — a combination that changes both the long-term progression grind and the moment-to-moment squad composition for players who fight without a full human team.
The timing also lines up with a crossover Warbond, Castellan's Creed, tied to the Warhammer 40,000 license, which went live earlier in August and gives players a themed set of weapons and cosmetics to earn alongside the new content.
For a game well into its second year of live service, Devoid of Liberty is a clear signal that Arrowhead isn't slowing down. Raising the level cap gives grinders a reason to keep playing, the new Void region and Illuminate variants keep the Galactic War narrative moving, and the AI squadmates lower the barrier for players without a full human squad on hand. Expect the meta shakeup from the rebalancing to settle over the coming weeks as players adapt loadouts to the new enemy types.
